Why Do I Have To Pay???
Last week I had my car stolen. I swear I'm developing psychic skills. Only a few days before, my dad had taken my car in the morning (he uses the car quite frequently, so there's no reason to suspect anything) and I thoughts of my car being stolen rushed into mind. I have no clue why I felt that way. On that day the car was stolen, my dad wasn't home, so I thought he had taken it again. Wasn't until hours later that he was home, I was home, but yet, the car wasn't.
It was the first time that a car was stolen from me. My other car used to get broken into a lot (over three times at the same house), so I was a frequent caller to RCMP and ICBC.
It wasn't like I had plans to use the car that evening, but I couldn't help feeling sad that it wasn't home. It was raining that day. Looking out the window with raindrops falling and U2's "With or Without You" playing in the background made the moment even more sad.
In the evening, the RCMP called to tell me they had found my car. Yay? Should I be happy I get it back? Or should I have wished it a farewell so that I can collect some money? Oh well, at least I wouldn't have to shell out for a new car.
Two days after, I went into the claims center to take a look at the damage. Luckily no major damage. Just the ignition was ripped out. It was spooky to look at my car with other people's belongings in it. Even more spooky was the thought of a total stranger driving it. Rummaging through the contents, we found some cd's, some cd pouches, tons of travel size air freshners (they must have had a huff-fest), the coin/ashtray of a SUV, a bag of jumper cables, a few screwdrivers, a whole wack of garbage, some other stuff, and...a leather hatchet case. I know, I know, WTF?!?!? A leather hatchet case??? I don't even want to know what happened to the hatchet.
Now here's the part I don't understand. Why should I have to pay the deductable??? I had to shell out $40 for a gas-guzzling rental car ($40 in gas for 4 days and not excessive use!) and $55 for an optional damage waiver. I had to get it, what if the rental got stolen too?? That's another deductable I would have to pay. Aside from all that unnecessarily spent cash, the deductable was $300!!
I understand paying a deductable if you were involved in a car accident. It's a risk you take when you drive. But why should I have to shell out $400 for something I could never have prevented?? It's like a punishment for letting hooligans steal your car! This is an outrage!
So now I'm $400 poorer, and on hold to see if the claim center will reimburse the $250 for the car rental that I had to pre-pay.
